Elizabeth Vigee-Le Brun: Empowering Portraitist

Born on this day in 1755 in Paris, renowned portrait painter Élisabeth Vigee Le Brun received her first instruction in her craft from her artist father. Beginning to paint professionally in her early teens, Vigee Le Brun would become most famous for her more than 30 portraits of Marie Antoinette. After an extended exile following the revolution, she was able to return to France in 1802. Her works are in the permanent collections of the Louvre, the Uffizi, and the Metropolitan Museum, among others, and in private collections worldwide.
