Sioux Falls SculptureWalk is an outdoor art epicenter this South Dakota city
Sioux Falls SculptureWalk is a must visit. While South Dakota may be famous for its majestic Black Hills, its wide-open spaces, and its “four Presidential faces,” the state is quickly gaining notoriety for its progressive embrace of arts and culture, especially in Sioux Falls.
Sioux Falls, South Dakota’s most populated city, is also one of its most culturally and artistically diverse. Community leaders in Sioux Falls—from government officials to business owners—recognize that an active arts sector not only drives tourism but also attracts new businesses and entrepreneurs. With that in mind, the city offers an impressive number of experiences to bolster interest in the arts.
SculptureWalk draws art enthusiasts to Sioux Falls
SculptureWalk is perhaps the most visible art installation in Sioux Falls. It is an ever-changing public exhibit of sculptures that spans the downtown area between Washington Pavilion to Falls Park. Since 2009, SculptureWalk places art in front of the thousands of pedestrians in downtown Sioux Falls each day.
From May to September, the public can influence the local art culture even further by voting for which sculpture should win the coveted “People’s Choice Award.” The winning sculpture then joins the city’s permanent collection.
Jim Clark, the Director of SculptureWalk, describes the importance of the award. He says, “For SculptureWalk to continue to be the best, we need to make sure that our artists are recognized for their great work and at the same time engage the community and our visitors to be a part of our program. It is rewarding to see the past winners displayed downtown and around the city. We really are a city of sculpture, and we’re committed to continuing that tradition in the future.”
Art beyond SculptureWalk
SculptureWalk isn’t the only way to experience art in downtown Sioux Falls. Washington Pavilion is a hub for arts, sciences, and entertainment for the city and the surrounding area.
From its beautifully restored historic building to its prime location among the famed exhibits of SculptureWalk, Washington Pavilion carries out its mission of “making art and science part of the daily lives” of South Dakotans. It features two world-class theaters, more than 100 interactive science exhibits, and a host of educational films and exhibits to support the arts within the Sioux Falls community.
Just two blocks away, the Museum of Visual Materials plays host to a wide variety of children’s activities, classes, camps, crafts, exhibits, and more. Much more than a museum, the historic facility is “a place for people to learn, play, create, and celebrate.”
Other exhibits and experiences in Sioux Falls include an award-winning symphony orchestra and several museums that pay homage to the history, architecture, and art of Sioux Falls’ rich, Midwestern heritage. South Dakota, with its breathtaking landscapes, is almost a work of art in itself. The city of Sioux Falls is committed to promoting the arts in all of its many forms.
