Swingin’ Benny Goodman

Born on this day in New York City in 1909, Benjamin David “Benny” Goodman grew up in Chicago and began studying clarinet at age ten. A natural player, Goodman began playing professionally early and, after playing as a sideman in New York for a time, went on to become one of the biggest bandleaders and recording stars of the Big Band Era. Goodman’s many honors include the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
