DAILY FUEL: Percy Sledge – Undeniable Soul

American Rhythm and Blues and soul singer PERCY SLEDGE was born in Leighton, Alabama on this day in 1940, and worked at farm and hospital jobs, performing music on weekends, before scoring a recording contract with producer Quin Ivy. “When a Man Loves a Woman” was Sledge’s first recording under contract, and was released in March of 1966. A number 1 hit in the U.S., the record went international and had two releases in the UK. In addition to fielding several other top-40 singles,  Sledge had a significant touring career in the U.S. and abroad, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
