YouTube’s ‘Dear Class of 2020’ should be a grad celebration for the history books
In the last few months, the class of 2020 has received nothing but bad news. But the folks over at YouTube have a little grad gift that might brighten your day.
Together, they’re presenting a special livestream graduation event called “Dear Class of 2020” on June 6.
It promises to be a commencement ceremony like none other.
The Line Up
Right out of the gate, the event’s headliners are heavy hitters: Barack and Michelle Obama. They will each deliver a commencement speech, and come together for a joint address to encourage this year’s grads.
Michelle Obama’s initiative, Reach Higher, will roll out a full hour presentation that tells the stories of students around the world. Then, several speakers will take the virtual stage, including former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Malala Yousafzai, and Lady Gaga.
After that impressive line up of speakers, a cast of artists will crank up the fun factor with a full livestream concert. The performance includes Alicia Keys, Kelly Rowland, BTS and Lady Gaga.
Other special appearances include Kerry Washington, Dude Perfect, The Try Guys, AsapSCIENCE, Mr. Kate, Zendaya, and the list goes on.
With the lockdowns and social distancing measures in place, graduates won’t get to enjoy the normal festivities surrounding graduation this year. Four years of hard work can’t culminate in…nothing.
This event is an attempt to give them something special to enjoy even if they can’t physically attend a graduation ceremony at their school.
Susanne Daniels, the global head of content for YouTube, says that she hopes the event will encourage and inspire this year’s seniors despite the circumstances.
It won’t quite be the same but bringing together popular artists and speakers for an incredible online event is YouTube’s gift to the entire class of 2020 — to let them know they’re not forgotten.
The multi-hour event will begin at 3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT on Saturday, June 6. Those who want to keep the celebration going can stick around for the afterparty hosted by BTS.
