Bigtime Smalltown: John Updike

American novelist, poet and literary critic John Updike — one of only a handful of authors to have won the Pulitzer Prize twice — was born on this date in 1932. The  prolific Updike wrote, in his own words, about “the American small town, Protestant middle class”. He is widely regarded as one of the great American writers of the 20th Century.
