The Color Purple Breaks the Pulitzer Barrier

The Color Purple by Alice Walker won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction on this date in 1983 — the first for a black woman. Published in 1982, Walker’s novel has been adapted into a film by Stephen Spielberg in 1985 and a Broadway musical in 2005 . Among the most praised and banned books of the 20th Century, the novel also won the National Book Award for Fiction in 1983.
