The Birth of MGM

On this date in 1924, Marcus Loew combined Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures and Louis B. Mayer Pictures into a single movie studio, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which would ultimately go on to become one of the “big five” studios that dominated Hollywood in the 20th Century. In the 1980’s, after the company had expanded into gambling and resorts, its new owner Ted Turner sold off the company’s Culver City movie lot, retaining the film library. Among the studio’s prized holdings are the Rocky and James Bond franchises. Just last month, a deal was finalized for Amazon to acquire MGM for $8.45 billion.
