NTR: Patriarch of Indian Cinema

The actor, screenwriter and filmmaker Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao was born on this day in 1923 in Andhra Pradesh, India. NTR, as he was known, first appeared in 1949 and would go on to star in over 300 films. Rao made his name playing Hindu deities, particularly Krishna, Karan and Rama, and was voted the “Greatest Indian Actor of All Time”. The recipient of three National Film Awards, Rao began a successful career in politics in 1982, serving three terms as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.
