Though it received favorable reviews, Fitzgerald’s tale of class and wealth on Long Island’s Gold Coast was a commercial disappointment during his lifetime. Distributed for free to troops during World War II, the book attained renewed popularity as well as reexamination, and has since been regarded as a classic.
