DAILY FUEL: The Carol Burnett Show

The American television variety-sketch series THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW aired for the first time on this day in 1967.

Show business veteran Burnett approached the network while under contract to CBS and, despite being met with initial resistance, became the first woman to headline a primetime variety program. Joined by an original cast that included Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, and Lyle Waggoner (eventually replaced by frequent guest Tim Conway), Burnett’s original series ran until 1978 and went on to win 25 Primetime Emmy Awards, three for Best Variety Series.
