DAILY FUEL: Gunsmoke

Adapted from the original radio series, television’s GUNSMOKE was first broadcast on this date in 1955. Initially entitled “Gun Law” the series set in Dodge City, Kansas during the 1870’s settlement of the American West was created by John Meston and Norman Macdonnell and starred James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon.

Hugely popular, the show ascended to number 2 in its second season, became number one until 1961, and was in the top twenty until 1964. Running until 1975, Gunsmoke is the second-longest running television program produced for adults in history.
