Chloe Zhao Breaks an Oscars Barrier

On this date in 2020, Chloe Zhao became the first woman of color to receive the Best Director Oscar. Her film Nomadland, based on the 2017 non-fiction work “Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century” by Jessica Bruder, starred Frances McDormand as a widow traveling the country by van as a “nomad”. A critical and commercial success, Nomadland also won Oscars for Best Actress (McDormand) and Best Picture of 2020.
