Ackerman’s “Jeanne Dielman”

Chantal Ackerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, widely regarded as a feminist cinematic masterpiece, premiered at Cannes on this day in 1975. The landmark work follows a widowed mother of a teenage son through the routine of a drab existence over three days. Less an entertainment than a study in stasis, the 3-hour plus work dares to reveal emptiness as empty.
