2001: Odyssey for the Ages


2001: A Space Odyssey, the landmark cinematic space adventure directed by Stanley Kubrick as derived from Arthur C. Clarke’s 1951 short story “The Sentinel”, premiered on this day in 1968. Although just failing to break even in its initial release, 2001 has found major audiences in subsequent reprises beginning in 1971.The film has earned $146 million worldwide to date.  A source of very mixed critical reception, even debate, the film is now considered one of the greatest of all time, and was selected in 1991 for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
