With this year being anything but normal, we haven’t enjoyed the usual holiday festivities. Halloween is shaping up to be no exception, so we wanted to put together some of the best celebrity Halloween costumes of recent years. While looking back through the years of celebrities dressing up as movie characters and other famous figures through history, we learned that no one, and we mean no one, has inspired more costumes than Sonny & Cher. We could’ve written an entire article alone on celebrities copying famous outfits from the rock duo. For this reason, we have decided to leave out any Sonny & Cher inspired outfits, but seriously look it up; it’s remarkable the influence they had. Here’s our list of the best celebrity Halloween costumes.
Cher as Cleopatra
Okay, we said we wouldn’t feature Sonny & Cher, but what about just Cher? In 1988 Cher stepped out as Cleopatra in an outfit designed by the famed Bob Mackie. Mackie, who won the Tony Award for Best Costume Design in a Musical, has worked with Cher for over 50 years and was an enormous part of launching her forward as a fashion icon in the early ’70s.
Harry Styles as Elton John
British singer Harry Styles is seen here donning an outfit worn in 1975 by musical icon Elton John. Elton John performs two sold-out shows at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles and one night appeared on stage with a full Dodgers baseball kit adorned with sparkles, because why wouldn’t he?

Lupita Nyong’o as Dionne Davenport
In 1995 the teen comedy Clueless was released in theatres. The Oscar-winner-to-be, Lupita Nyong’o was just 12 years old at the time. Here she is dressed almost flawlessly as Dionne Davenport, cinderblock of a cell phone and all. Dionne Davenport was played by Stacey Dash in the now cult classic.

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas as Morticia Addams and Gomez
Sophie Turner and her now-husband Joe Jonas have consistently brought out great costumes each year since they started dating back in 2016. However, their representation of Gomez and Morticia Addams was damn near faultless. The height of Sophie Turner over Joe Jonas, the ‘Thing’ resting on Jonas’ shoulder, and Turner’s exaggerated cheekbones all cementing this fabulous recreation.
Ciara and Russell Wilson as Beyonce & Jay-Z
Last year in 2019, the best couples costume was arguably done by Ciara and Russell Wilson, inspired by the viral video created by Beyonce & Jay-Z. “APES**T” by The Carters features them traversing The Louvre in Paris and one-shot posing in front of the Mona Lisa. The Wilson’s opted for a portrait of the former first couple, Michelle and Barack Obama.
Nas as Richard Pryor
Queens native Nas, widely considered one of the most influential rappers of all time with his poetry style music, dressed up as another man who is also considered one of the greatest at his craft. Mr. Richard Pryor, one of the greatest comedians of all time, also had a ‘storytelling’ style. Nas mirrored the comedian’s outfit from the famed set, Live From the Sunset Strip, and wore a faux afro to cover his infamous 360 waves.
Halima Aden as Maleficent
A best celebrity Halloween costumes list wouldn’t be complete without a Maleficent. Last but not least, we have Halima Aden, who showed up to Heidi Klum’s 20th annual Halloween party in a Maleficent inspired costume that looked as if it was pulled from the set of the film. Aden, 22 at the time, had gained international attention for being the first woman to wear a hijab in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant, where she was a semi-finalist. After this attention, she signed with IMG Models in New York, Paris, Milan, and London.
