I Love Lucy Ends Its First Run

On this date in 1957, I Love Lucy, the situation comedy starring (and produced by) Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, aired the 180th and final episode of its initial run. One of the most influential sitcoms ever, the show was the most watched television program in four of its six years and was the first ever to complete its run on top. Pioneering the use of three cameras and flat lighting, each 22 minute episode could be shot in front of a live studio audience in about an hour. I Love Lucy collected five Emmy Awards between 1951 and 1957, and remains a popular mainstay in syndication and through various home media.
