Vincent Van Gogh: A Life in Art

Born on this day in the Netherlands in 1853, Vincent Van Gogh was widely dismissed as mentally ill and was a commercial failure during his lifetime. Nearly thirty when he began to make art in earnest, Van Gogh —with the financial support of his brother Theo — would produce some 2100 works in a decade, including some 860 oil paintings.

Today Van Gogh’s paintings are among the world’s most valuable, with several having commanded sales prices over $100 million.
