The Many Lives of Debbie Reynolds

Born on this day in 1932, Debbie Reynolds sustained a career as an actress and singer on stage, on television, and in film and recordings for nearly 70 years. Growing up poor in West Texas, Reynolds won the Miss Burbank beauty contest after her family moved to California when she was 16.

Scouted by the studios at that pageant, she made her breakthrough with 1952’s Singing in the Rain, co-starring Gene Kelly, and Donald O’Connor.

The mother of actress and author Carrie Fisher, Reynolds received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild (2014) and the Jean Hershel Humanitarian Oscar at the Academy Awards in 2015.
