DAILY FUEL: Whoopi Goldberg – Groundbreaker

American actor and comedian WHOOPI GOLDBERG was born on this day in 1955 and grew up in a public housing project in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. After dropping out of high school and living and working for a time in San Diego, Goldberg returned to New York and created her one-woman show “Spook Show”. Re-titled “Whoopi Goldberg” by Mike Nichols, who produced it on Broadway, she was the sensation of the 83-84 Broadway season. Among those who saw the show was Stephen Spielberg, who then cast her in his 1985 feature “The Color Purple”. She has never stopped since, and is the first black woman to have achieved EGOT status, having won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.
