DAILY FUEL: Tyler Perry – American Maverick

Filmmaker, playwright and actor TYLER PERRY was born in New Orleans on this day in 1969, and dropped out of high school following a difficult childhood.

Perry started writing and producing plays after moving to Atlanta in 1990, and began to achieve real success with the touring of his works on the “chitlin circuit”, developing a devoted African-American audience. Funded partly with proceeds from his theater works, Perry’s first film, 2005’s “Diary of a Mad Black Woman”, would eventually gross $50.6 million dollars, and would pave the way to his highly successful “Madea” franchise of film comedies.

He has gone on to create the OWN television network with Oprah Winfrey as well as a major film studio, Tyler Perry Studios, in Atlanta.
