DAILY FUEL: Sesame Street -A New Direction

Debuting on this date in 1969 on PBS, SESAME STREET was the “first preschool educational television program to base its contents and production values on laboratory and formative research”. The brainchild of TV producer Joan Ganz Cooney and Ford Foundation VP Lloyd Morrisett, the show sought to “master the addictive qualities of television and do something good with them”. Employing sketch comedy, animation, live action, and — perhaps most essentially — introducing Jim Henson’s Muppets, the show was an immediate success. Sesame Street has been running continuously for 53 years and as of 2021 had garnered 205 Emmy and 11 Grammy awards.
