DAILY FUEL: Screen Icon Sophia Loren

Born in Rome on this day in 1934, actress Sofia Costanza Brigida Villani Scicolone grew up in and near Naples with her single mother, and entered  beauty pageants before attending film school at fifteen. Following a couple of minor roles, director Carlo Ponti convinced Sofia to become SOPHIA LOREN professionally, and, from her first starring role in 1953’s “Aida”, she was a sensation. After 1954’s “The Gold of Naples”, Loren became an international star. In a long career in Italy and around the world, Loren has received numerous Donatello Awards, two Oscars, and a Grammy, in addition to a variety of other honors. She was still working as recently as 2020.
