DAILY FUEL: Juju’s King Sunny Adé

Nigerian Juju singer and songwriter KING SUNNY ADÉ was born Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye in Ondo on this day in 1946 to a Nigerian royal family. Adé went to Lagos ostensibly to attend university and by 1967 had formed his first band, The Green Spots. In the following decades, he expanded traditional Juju music with the introduction of electric instruments and gained national popularity. Adé started his own record label in the 1970’s and was signed by Island Records in 1982, leading to international recognition and Grammy nominations for his albums “Juju Music” (1982) and “Synchro System” (1983).
