DAILY FUEL: Ike Turner – Rock Pioneer

American bandleader, songwriter, early Rock and Roll pioneer and producer IKE TURNER was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi on this date in 1931, and started playing guitar and piano as a child. While still a teenager, Turner began playing blues and boogie woogie with the Kings of Rhythm. The band had a number one record on the Rhythm and Blues charts for five weeks with “Rocket 88”, though the Chess label had credited the disc to “Jackie Brenton and His Delta Cats”.  Following a period where he also worked as a talent scout and session musician, he invited Anna Mae Bullock to join the band onstage in 1957, and both their fortunes were forever changed. At the suggestion of a DJ to “make her the star”, Ike convinced Anna to become Tina, and the Ike and Tina Turner Revue was born. Ike Turner won two Grammy Awards and was inducted with Tina Turner into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.
