DAILY FUEL: Georgia O’Keefe – Seeing Visionary

American artist GEORGIA O’KEEFE was born on this date in 1887 in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, and declared that she would “become an artist” at age ten. After studying at the School of Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York, she worked as a teacher and commercial illustrator. In 1917, art dealer and photographer Alfred Stieglitz presented an exhibition of O’Keefe’s work, and, after she moved to New York City, the two took their professional relationship further and were married in 1924. Sometimes called the “Mother of American modernism”, Georgia O’Keefe’s work achieved a deeply personal mode of abstraction. Her paintings are represented in the world’s finest museums.
