DAILY FUEL: BJÖRK – Northern Wonder

Born on this day in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1965, singer, composer and actress BJÖRK made her professional recording debut at age 11 with the album “Björk”, and played in several bands in Reykjavik during her teens. Her breakout band “The Sugarcubes” released the single “Birthday” on Björk’s 21st birthday in 1986, leading shortly thereafter to an American distribution contract. Though the band lasted only into 1992, Rolling Stone dubbed The Sugarcubes  “the biggest rock band to emerge from Iceland”. Beginning with 1993’s “Debut” and its 1995 follow-up “Post”, Björk ascended to international acclaim as a composer and vocalist at the forefront of recording and performing innovation. She has been nominated  for the Grammy 15 times, was the subject of a Museum of Modern Art Retrospective, and in 1997 received the Order of the Falcon (Iceland’s Order of Chivalry).
