Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun” on Broadway

A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry became the first play written by an African American woman to be produced on Broadway on this day in 1959. Directed by Lloyd Richards, the production starred Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee, and was named Best Play of the year by the New York Drama Critics Circle.
