Discover the Best of Cincinnati

For this week’s Friday nudge, we encourage you to explore Cincinnati, one of the Midwest’s lesser-known art hubs. The city not only boasts historic architecture, and a reputation for impressive street art and open-space sculptures, it also offers a rich food and drink scene.

A stop into the historic Findlay Market and a lesson in cocktails is a great way to get to know Queen City

Here are a few ways to enjoy Cincinnati this week, or on a future visit to Queen City.

Findlay Market

First stop, we recommend carving out time to explore Findlay Market, Ohio’s oldest continuously operated public market and one of Cincinnati’s most cherished institutions. It sits Located just blocks from downtown in Over-the-Rhine, a dense historic neighborhood rich in 19th century architecture, and remains a bustling center for farm fresh, locally sourced, artisanal and specialty foods.

The market is home to more than 50 full-time merchants selling meat, fish, poultry, produce, flowers, cheese, deli, ethnic foods and more. On weekends, it hosts numerous street performers and several special events. This weekend, stop by to hear live music from Queen City Silver Stars (5-7 p.m. Aug. 21) and performers from Cincinnati Music Accelerator (12-2 p.m. Aug. 23), a nonprofit that helps accelerate artists’ music careers.

If you want to explore the market with some guidance, consider tapping the great resource that is Cincinnati Food Tours. The company’s founder, Barb Cooper, offers in-person tours that spotlight the best of the city’s culinary scene. Those who prefer to explore at their own pace can check out the company’s self-guided audio tour that allows guests to grab food from the market while enjoying recorded stories and fun facts on their own devices. Social distance while enjoying public art

As you stroll through downtown Cincinnati, make it a point to see some of the city’s contemporary sculptures. A curated tour by The Sculpture Center, called Art in Our Midst, offers a great guide for the young and the old to enjoy public art. The sculptures are all outdoors, so plenty of space to social distance. Learn more here.

Learn the art of mixology

Anyone (of drinking age) can enjoy this event from wherever they are. Each Sunday, the Kinley Hotel in downtown Cincinnati is hosting a livestream event on its Instagram page (@kinleyhotels). Each event spotlights “the art of creating,” and spotlights various local businesses ranging from candle-making to mixology to painting.

This Sunday, Aug. 30, the episode is called “The Art of Creating a Signature Cocktail.” The folks at Kinley said of the series, “This is an extension of Kinley’s purpose to encourage creativity, self-love, and connection— the name Kinley is derived from the term kinship and speaks to the hotel’s inclusive nature and intention to foster sincere relationships between people and the city of Cincinnati.”
