Walt Whitman: America’s Poet

Poet Walt Whitman was born in Huntington, New York on this day in 1819. Leaving formal schooling at age 11 to work at a variety of jobs, Whitman first self-published his major poetry collection, Leaves of Grass, in 1855, and continued revising it for the rest of his life. Called variously the “poet of America” and “democracy’s poet”, it is impossible to overstate Whitman’s impact on America’s culture and literature.
