DAILY FUEL: Movies Talk with The Jazz Singer

THE JAZZ SINGER, the film credited with ushering in the sychronized-sound era in movies, debuted on this date in New York City in 1927. Adapted from the play of the same name (itself adapted from Samson Raphaelson’s short story “The Day of Atonement”), the Warner Brothers production, directed by Alan Crosland, starred Al Jolson and featured him singing six songs. Producer Daryl F. Zanuck won the Oscar for the film at the first Academy Awards.
