DAILY FUEL: John Coltrane Jazz Giant

 Born in Hamlet, North Carolina on this date in 1926, jazz saxophone giant JOHN COLTRANE  began playing music in high school, and moved to Philadelphia to study upon graduation. After a stint in the Navy, Coltrane resumed formal study and began playing professionally, ultimately switching from alto to tenor saxophone when he joined Eddie Vinson in 1947. By the mid-50’s, he was playing with the biggest names in bebop, including his idol Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Johnny Hodges. He went on to play with both Thelonius Monk and Miles Davis, and worked extensively in collaboration and on his own recordings. One of the most influential musicians in 20th century music and jazz, Coltrane received a special posthumous Pulitzer Prize, and was canonized by the African Orthodox Church, an Episcopalian denomination.
