The Eiffel Tower: A Timeless Symbol of Paris

The Eiffel Tower was inaugurated in Paris on this day in 1889. Named for French civil engineer Gustave Eiffel, the “dame de fer,” or Iron Lady, was constructed starting in 1887 for the World’s Fair. At 1083 feet (81 stories), the Tower was the world’s tallest manmade structure from its introduction until the building of NYC’s Chrysler Building some 41 years later. By now a global icon of both Paris and France, the monument is among the most visited in the world, seeing some 25,000 people daily.
